Where do you start?

 

Start with the State. There is information on your Washington State Master License that is required on the City of Arlington Business License application.

Are there places where some businesses aren't allowed?

Yes, zoning regulations must be followed. To determine what types of businesses can go in what zones please contact the Planning Department at 360.403.3551 before you apply for your business license.

 

What if the building needs remodeling or I'm adding a sign?

If you are planning signage for your business and/or any alterations to the buildings interior or exterior, please contact the Building Department at 360.403.3551 before you apply for your business license.

 

Where do I Get an Application

You can download an application; pick one up in the Executive Department on the second floor of city hall; or request one by mail by calling 360.403.3504.  This document cannot be faxed.

Submitting your license application

You may mail your application or turn it in at the city's Finance Department.  License fees are prorated quarterly.  July thru September $60; October - December $45; January - March $30; April - June $15 plus the $60 for the renewal.  This fee covers your review and the first year, or partial year, depending on when you apply for your license. 

 

Incomplete Applications

Incomplete applications will prolong the review process because they are returned to you for completion. Making sure you fill out the entire application helps us, help you.

 

Review by City Staff

The application review process takes 3 to 5 weeks, depending on the type of business. Each department in the city reviews the application for different information. If there are questions during the review process the reviewer will contact you.  Inspections are sometimes required.  Usually for Utilities and Fire.  An inspector will contact you to arrange a time and day for any required inspections. 

 

Receiving Your License

Once the review is complete and all departments have approved your application, your license is mailed to you.

 

Displaying Your License

Your license must be displayed on a wall in your business, visible to the public.

General Information
Business Licenses are non-transferrable.  If ownership changes or you move your business please notify the city as soon as possible.
