The Storm Drainage System—The Source of Storm Water and its Destination
Storm water is water from rainfall that flows over land into the City's drainage system through nearly 2,000 catch basins interconnected by almost 30 miles of conveyance lines. Also included in the system are a series of culverts, ditches, and detention ponds.
In addition to this man made system, we live in an area served by six natural stream systems. Quilceda Creek which is part of the Snohomish Watershed, and Kruger, Portage, Prairie, Eagle, and March creeks which are part of the Stillaguamish Watershed. We are contributing surface and groundwater to these waterways and sharing the watersheds with animals, birds, and fish.
The City of Arlington Storm Water Department, in accordance with the Department of Ecology phase II stormwater permit, has set up a 24-yhour hotline for reporting discharges and spills.
24 hour hotline 360-403-4600
This hotline is for reporting releases or spills such as paint, small fuel or ol spills, illegal dumping, muddy water being discharged into the City's storm system, and other non-emergency situations. The hotline is set up to be responded to during working hours. All emergencies are to go through the 911 system.

We Need Your Help
Everything that enters this man made or natural drainage system finds its way into a body of water. Please do your part to preserve water quality. Here is what you can do to help keep storm water clean and protect the environment for today and the generations to follow.
- Never pour oil, antifreeze, or paint down or near a storm drain or on the ground.
- Always recycle used motor oil. Dispose of household hazardous waste properly.
- Use natural fertilizers and pest control.
- Use commercial car washes that are connected to a sanitary sewer and conserve water by recycling rinse water.
- Protect shoreline habitat.
- Plant trees and native plants.
- Direct rain water appropriately so it can percolate into the soil.
- Use water wisely.
Thanks for doing your part to help keep the City of Arlington clean and beautiful.

The City of Arlington is continuing to develop its Stormwater Management Program (SWMP) 2009 work plan. The SWMP is a requirement under the NPDES Phase II Stormwater Permit. A preliminary draft document, version 2009-1, is provided here. Public comments are welcomed. Call Ken Clarke at 360-403-3523 to discuss your ideas and concerns. Check back again as the SWMP will be modified often through June 2008. Also provided is a copy of the City's 2008 annual report on its activities conducted under the Western Washington NPDES Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit.
